About the Role

Abilities First is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Classroom Teacher to join our school program in Poughkeepsie, NY. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality educational services to students with developmental disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessment and Planning: Use standardized and non-standardized assessment tools to determine the current level of performance of each student, and coordinate the planning and implementation of an instructional program that meets the individual educational needs of each student.
  • IEP Development and Implementation: Write IEPs, monthly progress notes, and weekly lesson plans, and coordinate classroom support staff in the assessment, planning, and implementation of each student's IEP.
  • Classroom Environment and Management: Organize and maintain a neat and structured environment, which assists the facilitation of each student's learning, including the use of space, selection of materials, scheduling, and behavior management.
  • Support and Collaboration: Assist in the classroom according to staffing patterns and students' needs, escort and assist students to and from the bus, and provide opportunities for students' increased independence in orientation and mobility.
  • Professional Development: Attend professional/general staff meetings and in-service training within the agency and throughout the community, and share knowledge with other members of the staff.
Requirements
  • Education and Certification: Master's Degree in Special Education with appropriate NYS Teaching Certification, or Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or a related field, with graduate level coursework in Special Education with NYS Provisional Certification or Certificate of Qualification.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to push and pull students in wheelchairs, lift, bend, squat, turn in the knees, pivot, and grasp with both hands, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Driver's License: Valid NYS driver's license deemed acceptable by our insurance carrier.
