Emergency Response: Deputy Public Defender Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated Deputy Public Defender to join our team in addressing the homelessness crisis. As an integral part of our emergency response, you will represent indigent defendants at various stages of criminal cases, ensuring their constitutional rights are protected.

The Los Angeles County Office of the Public Defender is a client-centered defense firm providing innovative solutions to the justice system. Our mission is to reduce incarceration rates for indigent clients and contribute to the county's homelessness emergency response.

Salary Information

New appointees will be compensated at Step 6 ($8,149.46) of the DPD I salary range, offering a competitive package for this critical role.

Job Description

  • Represent clients at various stages of criminal cases, including arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials.
  • Prepare and argue legal motions, negotiate with judges and prosecutors, and cross-examine witnesses to defend clients' rights.
  • Interview clients, witnesses, and family members to gather essential information and build rapport.
  • Conduct research, review documents, and prepare investigation requests to effectively represent clients.
  • Conferring with law enforcement, judges, and prosecutorial agencies to gather case information and negotiate resolutions.

Required Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must:

  • Meet one of the following requirements: admit to practicing law in all California courts, or graduate from law school and register to take the California State Bar examination.
  • Hold a valid California Class 'C' Driver License or have access to alternative transportation methods.
