About the Role

This is a senior leadership position within the Life Underwriting department at USAA, reporting directly to the Chief Life Underwriter. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of underwriting professionals in setting and implementing underwriting policy, ensuring alignment with expected mortality and morbidity performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwriting Policy Development: Create and provide oversight of internal underwriting operating guidelines and procedures in support of mortality management policy.
  • Medical Underwriting: Establish medical underwriting policies and practices in conjunction with the Chief Life Underwriter and Medical Directors.
  • Complex Case Management: Provide executive thought leadership on complex and unique underwriting cases and contestable claims.
  • Trend Analysis: Oversee and conduct ad-hoc mortality and risk classification trend analyses.
  • Project Sponsorship: Sponsor the underwriting innovation journey, providing oversight and accountability for delivering defined benefits within budget and timeline parameters.
  • Underwriting Automation: Lead the development of the Life Underwriting Policy team towards optimization of automated underwriting decision-making.
  • Platform Performance: Monitor existing underwriting automation platform performance and identify enhancements to improve the overall member experience.
  • Rule Validation: Validate underwriting rule changes to ensure adherence to Life Company and/or USAA risk tolerance.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with legislation and regulation regarding life insurance underwriting policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Product Development: Represent the underwriting discipline in new product development initiatives.
  • Relationship Building: Collaborate and build relationships with reinsurance and key business partners to promote a culture of continuous improvement, solve business challenges, and meet business goals.
  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a team of underwriting professionals responsible for results delivery through recruiting, development, retention, coaching, and performance management.
  • Executive Representation: Act on behalf of the Chief Life Underwriter in their absence.
  • Risk Management: Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree; or 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Experience: 10 years of life insurance underwriting experience with in-depth understanding of medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting principles and practices.
  • Leadership Experience: 4 years of people leadership experience in a life insurance underwriting function, including building, managing, and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Business Acumen: Executive-level business acumen in the areas of underwriting policy, innovation, and life insurance industry practices, emerging trends, major issues, and regulatory considerations.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep technical knowledge of underwriting systems, including underwriting rules engine and rules management.
  • Authority: $10,000,000 or more of Life Insurance Approval authority.
  • Certifications: Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
