Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our team at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering instruction to students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, utilizing the adapted curriculum and functional curriculum.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives through effective instruction and action.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, promoting a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create a comprehensive educational environment that meets the needs of students with diverse abilities.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and complete records, including attendance and grade records, as required by law and school policy.
  • Design and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) that meet the unique needs of students, modifying curriculum and instruction as necessary.
  • Assess student progress regularly, providing progress reports and meeting with parents to discuss student progress and goals.
  • Administer and interpret individual educational testing, using data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Utilize research-based instructional techniques and technology to meet the needs of students with diverse abilities.
  • Structure a proactive classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and social skills, meeting the needs of students with emotional and behavioral deficits.
  • Develop and implement behavioral intervention plans (BIPs) and IEP goals and objectives that address the function of inappropriate behavior and promote positive replacement behaviors.
  • Utilize positive behavior intervention strategies to de-escalate student behavioral excesses and promote a safe and supportive learning environment.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.
  • North Carolina Teaching License and Certification in Special Education.
  • Ability to produce effective lesson plans, use data analysis for instructional decision-making, and comply with local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Ability to effectively interact with principals, co-workers, students, and parents.
Physical Requirements

The work requires a combination of walking, sitting, and standing, with the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing. The work may require bending, squatting, reaching, and lifting up to 30 pounds, as well as pushing or pulling light weights, including wheelchairs. The work may also require exposure to bodily fluids when providing basic care to children with disabilities.
