Trauma Social Worker Job Description

The University of Virginia Health System is seeking a skilled Trauma Social Worker to join our team. As a Trauma Social Worker - Network Coordinator, you will play a critical role in promoting the development, implementation, and management of the Trauma Survivors Network.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Network Development and Management: Work closely with the Trauma Survivors Network Supervisor, Trauma Program Director, Trauma Medical Director, and hospital team members to develop and manage the Trauma Survivors Network program.
  • Patient Support and Education: Meet with eligible trauma patients in the hospital, educate patients and their families about the TSN, and provide opportunities for participation in the program.
  • Program Coordination: Coordinate the development and facilitation of support and education programs, including peer visitation, trauma support groups, family programs, and self-management classes.
  • Mental Health Services: Provide screening, brief counseling, support, and education services to meet the unique mental health challenges of patients and family members.
  • Clinical Interventions: Utilize clinical interventions, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques, to facilitate behavioral change and adaptation to new circumstances after trauma.
  • Screening and Enrollment: Screen eligible traumatic injury patients for risk of PTSD and enroll patients in Trauma Resilience & Recovery Program services.
  • Substance Use Screening: Screen eligible traumatic injury patients using a validated substance use and alcohol misuse screening tool and provide brief intervention and referral to treatment if necessary.
  • Continuing Care Coordination: Identify patients and families requiring coordination of continuing care or community support and work with the care team to develop and coordinate a safe, timely, and appropriate discharge plan.

Requirements:

  • Education: Master's degree in Social Work from a CSWE accredited social work program required.
  • Experience: 3 years' experience post-master's required.
  • Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia (LCSW) or applicants with an active license from another state must obtain Virginia LCSW within 18 months of hire date.
