Job Summary

Confluence Health is seeking a skilled Laboratory Assistant I to join our team. As a Laboratory Assistant I, you will be responsible for performing laboratory procedures in phlebotomy and EKGs. You will input collection and receipt times into the Laboratory Information System, cancel and order tests as necessary, and register patients and complete specimen check-in processes.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Draw blood samples and treat patients with respect and courtesy.
  2. Provide patients with instructions regarding lab sample collection.
  3. Properly identify patients prior to and after blood collection.
  4. Label samples according to policy.
  5. Order and cancel lab tests in the HIS per physician direction.
  6. Collect and receive specimens individually and on tracking lists.
  7. Perform EKGs per policy.
  8. Assist in orienting and training new employees and students in phlebotomy and EKG.
  9. Research specimen requirements for reference laboratory testing.
  10. Prepare laboratory specimens for designated departments/locations prior to laboratory analysis and testing.
  11. Correctly identify proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage requirements for each test type.
  12. Load instruments with barcoded patient specimens under the direction of an MLT/MT.
  13. Deliver specimens to the testing areas and prepare excess specimen samples for storage.
  14. Identify problems and opportunities to improve patient services.
  15. Answer telephone calls in a respectful and courteous manner.
  16. Stock phlebotomy trays.
  17. Draw blood samples at external facilities.
  18. Transport lab specimens from external facilities to CWH lab using a CH vehicle.
  19. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • High School graduate.
  • Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist (MA-P) eligible.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
