About the Role: Abilities First is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Assistant to join our team in New Windsor, NY. As a key member of our School Program, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational, physical, social, and emotional needs of our students with disabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Classroom Teacher and Teaching Assistant in implementing students' Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Support students with daily living skills, such as feeding, toileting, and dressing.
  • Provide physical support and assistance with mobility, including pushing and pulling wheelchairs, lifting, and transferring students.
  • Participate in staff meetings and job skill training to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Collaborate with the therapy team to ensure seamless integration of therapy sessions into the classroom.
  • Assist with classroom organization and setup to create a conducive learning environment.
  • Escort students to and from school buses, promoting independence and mobility.
  • Participate in special activities, such as PE, art, and music, to enhance students' overall experience.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in early childhood and special education is preferred.
  • Ability to push and pull students in wheelchairs, lift, bend, squat, turn in the knees, pivot, and grasp with both hands, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
