Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Respiratory Intern to join our team. As a Respiratory Intern, you will have the opportunity to observe and participate in a variety of routine technical procedures in a classroom setting during department orientation.
Key Responsibilities
- Observe and assist with respiratory care treatments for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.
- Learn how to explain treatments to patients and/or families before performing them.
- Develop skills in patient observation, including noting physical signs and symptoms, general behavior, and responses to respiratory care procedures.
- Collaborate with therapists and physicians to determine the initiation, modification, or discontinuation of treatment regimens.
- Understand when to terminate treatment due to patient discomfort, medical status, or inability to accept treatment.
- Assist with CPR procedures, including airway management, manual ventilation, and cardiac compressions.
- Administer therapeutic and diagnostic gases, bronchodilator treatments, chest physiotherapy, and aerosolized medication treatments.
- Deliver oxygen and humidified air to reverse and prevent tissue hypoxia, treat arterial hypoxemia, decrease the work of breathing, and reduce myocardial work.
- Assist with artificial airway management, including the non-surgical insertion, maintenance, and removal of artificial airways.
- Learn the technique of suctioning artificial and nasal/oral airways using a sterile disposable catheter.
- Develop age-specific respiratory techniques for adult, pediatric, and neonatal populations.
- Apply and adjust mechanical ventilation and CPAP for critical care patients.
- Interpret chest x-rays and blood gas results, and observe patient appearance, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation, notifying doctors as required.
Requirements
- Preferred Education: Certificate from an AMA-approved program by the National Board of Respiratory Care in Respiratory Therapy or Associate's Degree in respiratory therapy or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of six months to one year of didactic and clinical respiratory care procedures (preferred).
- Required Knowledge: Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, biology, microbiology, technical mathematics, and pharmacology, medical terminology, and proficiency in operating equipment such as ventilators, nebulizers, aerosol masks, nasal cannulas, mist tents, oxyhoods, and other oxygen delivery devices.
- Certifications: CPR certification (required).
