Job Overview

We are seeking a Medical Care Assistant to join our team. This role involves providing direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Taking and recording vital signs, such as temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
  • Encouraging patients to turn, cough, and take deep breaths, and using incentive spirometry as specified by the plan of care.
  • Ambulating patients and assisting them in and out of bed, into wheelchairs, and transporting when necessary.
  • Attending to the nutritional needs of patients, including distributing meal trays, feeding, filling, and passing out water pitchers.
  • Providing morning or evening care, which may include bed baths, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning over-bed tables, and bedside stands, straightening rooms, and other supportive care as needed.
  • Emptying drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins, and recording intake and output.
  • Assisting in maintaining a safe environment, including reporting equipment that is out of order, handling linen appropriately, and storing supplies.
  • Providing general care, such as positioning, lifting, or turning patients; assisting in the use of bedpans, urinals, or commodes; preoperative supportive care; and applying/removing abdominal binders or anti-embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
  • Emptying and cleaning ostomy bags according to procedure.
  • Collecting urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
  • Performing tasks such as ROM (Range of Motion) exercises, assisting with ambulatory devices as specified by the patients' plans of care.
  • May perform phlebotomy (requires additional training), including correct labeling using two patient identifiers, maintaining lab-draw supplies, rotating, and restocking.
  • May perform EKGs (requires special training).
  • Promptly answering patient call lights and responding to patient requests.
  • Reporting significant changes in patients' conditions to RNs.
  • Helping to maintain clean and orderly patient and work environments.
  • Employing established infection control policies, including standard precautions, transmission-based isolation precautions, OSHA standards, safety measures, and proper body mechanics in job performance.
  • Documenting/maintaining patient records as appropriate.
  • Gathering equipment for O2 setup, checking O2 for connection and proper placement.
  • Checking for proper functioning of equipment at patient bedside.
  • Ambulating patients with oxygen.
  • Setting up suction equipment and checking for proper function.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and competency in providing age-specific needs of the population served.
  • Demonstrating ability to perform skills required of the position.
  • FOLLOWING POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND SAFETY STANDARDS, COMPLETING REQUIRED EDUCATION ASSIGNMENTS ANNUALLY, WORKING TOWARDS ACHIEVING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES, AND PARTICIPATING IN QUALITY IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES AS REQUESTED.

About the Role

This is a full-time position, working 72 hours per pay period, with a day shift schedule.

Requirements

  • Hospital experience preferred.
  • Medical terminology a plus.
  • Ability to operate a computer and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read with comprehension, write legibly, and perform basic arithmetic computations.
  • Understanding and knowledge of patient care that may be appropriately delegated to nursing assistants.

Compensation Package

We offer a competitive salary of approximately $$33,890 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
