Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced LGBTQIA+ Student Success Specialist to join our team at Pasadena Area Community College District. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing tailored retention and student success services for LGBTQIA+ students, leading the day-to-day activities of the LGBTQIA+ Center, and developing strategic initiatives focused on academic success, well-being, inclusion, celebration, and graduation of LGBTQIA+ students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support student outreach, recruitment, career, retention, completion, and transfer efforts, in collaboration with other campus partners, with a special focus on LGBTQIA+ students.
  • Connect linkages to LGBTQIA+ students to appropriate programs and services both on campus and off-campus to best assist them with issues affecting their retention, success, basic needs, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Monitor equity-focused LGBTQIA+ student involvement in on-campus support resources, including academic counseling, development of student educational plans, support services related to financial aid, scholarships, internships, transfer, including completion of transfer admission guarantees, and other campus services.
  • Collaborate with retention specialists and success coaches to coordinate and align LGBTQIA+ student success and retention efforts with District-wide retention efforts.
  • Collaborate with academic and career counselors, success coaches, instructional/non-instructional faculty, staff, instructional aids, tutors, and managers to identify potential barriers to LGBTQIA+ student persistence and develops culturally responsive strategies to address these barriers.
  • Monitor responses and supports for LGBTQIA+-identified students Early Alerts submitted by faculty and staff through the establishment of goals centered in equity to promote success.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations of the LGBTQIA+ Center, including front-desk coverage, event calendar management and scheduling.
  • Develop events and services for the LGBTQIA+ Center to support the educational experience of LGBTQIA+ students in collaboration with staff and faculty, including overseeing logistics and scheduling.
  • Prepare and provide educational workshops and trainings for students, staff, and faculty, on topics related to LGBTQIA+ inclusion, LGBTQIA+ student experience, strengths of LGBTQIA+ students, best practices for supporting LGBTQIA+ student success, and services available for students through the Center.
  • Utilize data to develop and assess tailored LGBTQIA+ student retention, academic success, basic needs, and services and programs through the LGBTQIA+ Center.
  • Provide short-term crisis intervention, long term advocacy and case management to assist LGBTQIA+ students, including but not limited to specialized support to LGBTQIA+ domestic violence survivors.
  • Help identify and track progress on student-directed and student-driven goals that support self-sufficiency.
  • Collaborate with campus-based mental health professionals to coordinate workshops and outreach that support the well-being needs of LGBTQIA+ students wellbeing and persistence.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations, including but not limited to services providers specializing in interpersonal and sexual violence, housing insecurity, and LGBTQIA+ specialized support.
  • Develop reports to assist the supervising manager with assessing the programs, services, and retention efforts of the LGBTQIA+ Center, including program review.
  • Identify goals of the LGBTQIA+ Center and resources necessary to assist the supervising manager to meet the changing needs of LGBTQIA+ students.
  • Monitor the center budget to assist the supervising manager in budget administration, including requisitions, documentation, and databases.
  • Collaborate with District staff to identify, hire and supervise hourly staff.
  • Develop work schedules for student workers and staff of the center.
  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate performance for student interns/workers and volunteers from a strengths-based perspective, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on LGBTQIA+ student programs and services.
  • Conduct LGBTQIA+ Center orientations to provide information of services.
  • Conduct trainings for student workers and hourly staff to familiarize staff with the operations of the LGBTQIA+ Center.
  • Assist in the development of culturally appropriate marketing and publicity materials such as flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms.
  • Update the LGBTQIA+ Center website to provide students with relevant information.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
