About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Planning and Design to join our team at Providence Health & Services. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for leading the planning and design phases of all capital projects in your assigned division.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead multidisciplinary approaches to ensure that sponsors, project managers, vendors, and other stakeholders obtain appropriate input from all stakeholders.
  • Manage vendor contracts to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget, establishing clear scopes, and ensuring that vendor and consultant performance is consistent with agreed-upon scope.
  • Partner with strategic planning teams to achieve strategic objectives involving the built environment, ensuring alignment with system priorities and supporting projects through key approval gateways during the design document phase.
  • Manage long-range market and site-specific master planning efforts, including the management of the process in which plans are developed and maintained to ensure every market in the division has a current master plan that supports capital planning.
  • Provide continuous feedback to executive sponsors, senior leadership, and others regarding project status.
  • Assimilate emerging conditions and trends in healthcare and apply them to planning and design efforts across the system.
  • Provide regular briefs to the Senior Director of Planning and Design regarding master plans, including project concerns and status updates.
  • Support internal and external teams in state and local legislative and regulatory bodies as appropriate to facilitate the approval process for healthcare facility master planning, land use applications, zoning changes, and traffic entitlements.
  • Manage the master planning process for the divisions to ensure all markets have a current plan that is updated on a set cadence.
  • Ensure projects in their division adhere to the system's architectural standards to the greatest extent possible.
  • Provide leadership and facilitation for real estate planning and design teams to meet assigned goals.
  • Support the resourcing efforts for planning and design projects, including vendors and consultants.
  • Support Planning and Design leadership, executive sponsors, strategy leaders, operations, construction, and other key stakeholders to develop project scope in support of divisional and service area strategies.
  • Support the RFP process for planning and architectural contractors within the region.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with authorities having jurisdiction at a global level.
  • Review and elevate to the Senior Director of Planning and Design architectural add services, planning/design scope change orders, and invoicing within the scope of the signatory matrix for projects within the pre-planning through design document phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Support the Senior Director of Planning and Design and the Construction team in ensuring Project Programs, Designs, Budgets, and Schedules are inclusive of all elements required for a complete project.
  • Manage the presentation of design, estimate, and program updates to Senior Leadership as documents progress.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that promotes team success and reflects the Providence Health & Services' Mission, philosophy, and Core Values.
  • Manage and develop the Managers of Planning and Design in their market, including resourcing in response to market needs, hiring, performance management, and development planning.
Requirements
  • Master's Degree in Architecture, Business, or Healthcare Administration, or equivalent education/experience.
  • 8 years of experience in architecture and design, a portion of which has been in the healthcare industry.
  • 6 years of management or applicable leadership experience.
  • 2 years of Healthcare experience.
  • 2 years of HACI experience (only applicable if the role supports markets in California).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and facilitate teamwork with multidisciplinary groups.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, leadership, interpersonal skills, and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Creative problem-solving skills; ability to negotiate solutions to complex problems to further the goals of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior leadership on complex planning issues that have direct impact on the delivery of care for both acute care and satellite sites.
  • Demonstrates Providence Health and Services' Mission, Vision, and Core Values to customers, employees, and visitors; and provides quality services in the performance of work assignments and duties.   • Project management skills.
  • Excellent reputation and knowledge of design and architecture firms and local jurisdiction having authority.
  • Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Project.
  • Ability to inspire and develop staff.
