Job Description:

TEPHRA is seeking a highly experienced Senior Instrumentation and Control Project Engineer to join our team in Pittsburgh, PA. This role will support multiple plants across various states, requiring extensive travel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop process control strategies, alarms, and information management with minimal oversight.
  • Direct teams to analyze and define I&E/PCT requirements, and perform actual configuration and testing of control systems.
  • Participate in preliminary and process safety reviews, emphasizing PCT systems and equipment.
  • Direct designers, contractors, vendors, and technicians from conceptual design through construction and commissioning of I&E/PCT systems.
  • Generate hardware and software documentation for procurement, configuration, testing, installation, and maintenance of I&E/PCT systems.
  • Interface with other engineering disciplines, designers, operations, and maintenance personnel to achieve project objectives.
  • Ensure cost and schedule compliance within assigned areas of responsibility.

  • This position is responsible for all I&E/PCT requirements for assigned projects, providing detailed engineering and directing activities of others involved in realizing I&E/PCT strategies.
  • Key performance parameters include schedule compliance, scope compliance, and cost control.
  • The incumbent will be involved in problem-solving decisions daily, focusing on:
    • Developing alternative solutions to problems, handling complex problems independently.
    • Demonstrating strong technical expertise and adaptability to changing circumstances.
    • Displaying flexibility with assignments in different units/plants.
    • Applying new technology.
    • Properly applying standards and guidelines, especially related to I&E/PCT documentation, configuration conventions, and testing.
    • Identifying customer requirements and negotiating the best cost/benefit solution.
    • Enforcing standards and policies/procedures, submitting deviations when required.
    • Performing special studies to evaluate new equipment or engineering tools for the project or PCT department.
    Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (or equivalent) in Electrical or Chemical engineering, plus 4 years of experience.
    • Master's Degree with 2-4+ years of experience.
    • PhD with 1-3 years of experience.
    • Preferred experience: 6+ years in chemical, petro-chemical, or industrial facilities in I&E/PCT design and engineering or equivalent experience.
    • Professional registration and/or certification as required.
    • Excellent knowledge of PCT documentation, automation validation, quality assurance, etc.
    • Excellent knowledge of process control strategies and systems safety systems and industrial control networks.
    • Excellent knowledge of process instrumentation.
    • Knowledge of low voltage electrical systems.
    • Strong computer hardware and software skills.
    • Excellent knowledge of relevant national and international standards in the area of process control, low voltage electrical, and instrumentation.
    • Knowledge of project control skills, including project planning, scheduling, cost control, and contract development.
    • Experience in providing field support and participating in check out, commissioning, and start-up of process control installations.
    • Systematic approach to problem definition and solution development.
    • Ability to work as a member of cross-functional teams and participate in multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to deal with people at different levels of management, engineering, and design, and with internal customers (e.g., engineering, maintenance, operations) and suppliers of PCT material and services.
    • Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with and obtain cooperation from team members involved in engineering, design, check out, commissioning, and start-up.
    • Willingness and ability to travel 40-50% of the time when job assignment dictates.
    • Willingness and ability to work additional hours when job assignment dictates.
    • Will to pursue advanced education (i.e., Master's Degree) or certifications and training when job assignment dictates.
    • Experience with DeltaV and Allen Bradley Control Systems.
