Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Director, Policy and Regulatory Affairs to join our team at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. This is a key leadership role that will require the successful candidate to lead all regulatory health policy initiatives and activities on behalf of the Association.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Regulatory Health Policy Initiatives: Develop and implement effective strategies to advance the Association's policy goals and objectives in the areas of health policy and regulatory affairs.
  • Provide Staff Support: Provide expert guidance and support to AAOS staff on policy development, analysis, and implementation.
  • Communicate with Federal Agencies: Establish and maintain relationships with federal regulatory agencies, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Manage Policy Committees: Supervise staff liaison activities to AAOS committees, including the Coding, Coverage & Reimbursement Committee, Health Care Systems Committee, and Clinical Quality and Value Committee.
  • Advise on Policy Matters: Provide expert advice to AAOS leadership and staff on policy issues related to physician payment, health policy, and regulatory affairs.
  • Develop Educational Content: Help produce and manage content for AAOS educational products and programs on public and private health insurance payment issues, member communication, and advocacy.
  • Interpret Policy Trends: Analyze and interpret information and trends relating to Medicare payment policy, quality reporting measures, and alternative physician payment models.
  • Supervise Health Policy Team: Supervise a team of health policy analysts and coding and reimbursement professionals.
  • Communicate with Stakeholders: Establish and maintain relationships with government officials, third-party carrier representatives, and other medical society leaders and staff.
  • Develop Policy Positions: Advise AAOS positions on policy issues of importance to AAOS members, including but not limited to, prior authorization, surprise medical billing, device regulations, and specific procedure codes.
Essential Qualifications
  • 7-10 Years of Experience: At least 7-10 years of relevant experience in health policy, with a strong understanding of the Medicare resource-based physician payment system.
  • Excellent Analytical and Communication Skills: Excellent analytical, communication (written and oral), organization, management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Supervisory Experience: Supervisory experience and strong management skills.
  • Proficiency in Business Applications: Proficiency in common business computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet).
Desired Qualifications
  • Master's Degree: A Master's degree in a related field, such as public health, health policy, or business administration.
  • Experience Staffing Committees: Experience staffing medical association committees.
