About the Job

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality patient care, supervising the treatment and services provided by LPNs, CNAs, and other staff on assigned units and shifts. This includes developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized plans of care for each patient, assessing and reassessing patients, communicating effectively with the interdisciplinary team, and reporting patient concerns and changes in condition to supervisors and/or physicians in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide and coordinate patient care by assessing physical and behavioral health needs, developing and implementing nursing care plans, maintaining accurate medical records, and educating patients and their families about various physical and behavioral health conditions while ensuring patient safety at all times.
  • Assess patient status on an ongoing basis and document pertinent information.
  • Ensure that nursing treatment plans are specific to assessed needs and complete initial treatment plans upon admission.
  • Take physician orders accurately and document them appropriately; transcribe and review physician orders, ensuring they are legible if taken verbally and transcribed accordingly per policy and procedure.
  • Administer medications as ordered, document accurate counts of controlled substances, adjust medications under provider supervision as needed, and monitor lab results to validate medication compliance.
  • Notify physicians of significant changes in patient status, such as difficulties with detox, medical emergencies, or changes in medical status regarding response to medications, etc.
  • Supervise self-administration of medications using safety initiatives, including two means of patient identification, and document effects of scheduled and PRN medications.
  • Maintain accountability of administration, recording, control, and security of medications, including narcotics.
  • Complete admission and discharge processes efficiently and accurately as directed.
  • Confer regularly with the treatment team regarding patient care, attend and participate in unit activities, such as therapy groups, family meetings, staffing, and unit meetings, as appropriate.
  • Provide education and explanation to patients, families, and coworkers regarding medication usage/maintenance, common side effects, patient rights, and other topics necessary for optimal patient care.
  • Monitor patient acuity, census, and staffing needs, making arrangements for coverage as needed, following established guidelines.
  • Ensure thorough and accurate documentation for all patients on each shift and complete patient assignment sheets daily, carrying out assigned tasks.
  • Give thorough reports to oncoming staff, supervisors, and physicians.
  • Provide coverage in emergency services as needed.
Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements
  • Graduation from an approved/accredited school of nursing.
  • One or more years of nursing experience within the clinical area of service provided by the facility, preferred.
  • Experience in behavioral health/psychiatric/addiction recovery environments, preferred.
Licenses, Designations, and Certifications
  • Valid current RN license from the state or a compact state, where applicable.
  • Certified in psychiatric nursing, preferred.
  • CPR and de-escalation and restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by the facility).
  • First aid may be required based on state or facility requirements.
