Job Summary

This position plays a crucial role in the Laboratory by assisting the Laboratory Supervisor in monitoring the work of technical and ancillary employees. The Lead Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for test development, gathering data for management reports, and performing routine and advanced testing with accuracy. In the absence of the Supervisor, this position functions as the Laboratory Supervisor, ensuring compliance with the UPMC mission and values for providing service excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient, hospital, and laboratory business.
  • Interacts professionally with other departments and represents the Laboratory on Hospital committees as needed.
  • Adheres to abnormal and/or critical results reporting policy and turn-around-time policy.
  • Participates in and monitors quality assurance indicators.
  • Assumes supervisory duties and performs in-charge duties as needed.
  • Evaluates problems in the absence of the Supervisor and solves those that are possible.
  • Communicates problems with the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager, or Director as appropriate.
  • Participates in an extensive administrative call rotation with other supervisory staff.
Requirements

This position requires an Associate's Degree and three years of experience with certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or four years of experience without certification. Two years of experience in the host laboratory is preferred. One year of experience in Histocompatibility in an ASHI-accredited laboratory is required for the Tissue Typing Laboratory. Certification as a Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) is required for the Tissue Typing Laboratory. A New York license is required for NY locations, and six years of clinical lab experience are required for NY locations and those laboratories holding NY state licensure.

Act 34 clearance is also required.
