The Pharmacy Technician II assists registered pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications. The role requires proficiency in all areas and is performed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
Key Responsibilities
- Follows standard work processes to ensure efficient medication preparation and distribution.
- Fills and delivers medication orders for all age groups under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Answers and screens telephone calls, referring calls to a pharmacist when necessary.
- Performs cart fills, refills automated dispensing machines, and restocks emergency boxes and kits.
- Processes charges and credits for medications.
- Compounds and repackages oral medications.
- Documents and delivers controlled substances.
- Compounds sterile preparations using proper aseptic technique, following USP 797 guidelines.
- Compounds hazardous high-risk preparations using proper aseptic technique, following USP 800 guidelines.
- Performs medication reconciliation for patients being admitted to the hospital.
- Performs computer order entry of ambulatory prescriptions independently.
- Trains and orients new teammates to department workflow and procedures.
- Troubleshoots departmental equipment problems and drug distribution issues.
- Solves problems independently and seeks additional support when required work is complete.
- Accepts assignments in non-primary areas or facilities.
- Adheres to all Atrium Health policies and procedures.
Physical Requirements
The Pharmacy Technician II works primarily in the pharmacy, delivering medications to nursing units. The role requires considerable walking, standing, pushing a mobile cart of 50 pounds maximum, and lifting 25 pounds of material. The position may involve frequent stretching, bending, squatting, or kneeling to perform tasks. The employee must utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure to hazardous agents and take necessary precautions to avoid inadvertent needle sticks, minor cuts, or bruises. The work environment involves various conditions throughout the day, such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, and changes in temperature and humidity. The employee must be able to perform manipulative skills, such as writing, typing, and data entry into the computer and automated dispensing machines. The role requires the use of both hands, clear vision, and the ability to read small type. The employee must be able to speak and be understood by others to communicate effectively and hear normal sounds with moderate background noises. The position involves rotating shifts.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
A High School Diploma or GED is required. A Pharmacy Technician Board Certificate is required and must be maintained. Twelve months of prior Pharmacy Technician experience is preferred. The employee must be in good standing with the organization.
