Job Summary

This key position will play a critical role in providing data warehouse services to support various areas of our mission, including strategy, operations, education, and research. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and growing our data warehouse technical stack, consulting with developers for smooth deployments, and ensuring data is ingested and curated into our data warehouse on schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer the systems environment for the UCSF Enterprise Data Warehouse, creating databases, provisioning users, and supporting data engineers to meet UCSF's data and analytics needs.
  • Provision users in Microsoft SQL Server and develop automation processes to eliminate manual effort where possible.
  • Create new databases in SQL Server, hosted in the UCSF Secure Enterprise Cloud - Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment.
  • Manage the environment, including EC2, EBS, DMS, S3, and Lambda.
  • Create new schemas in SQL Server with appropriate attention to data security.
  • Support 20+ ETL developers to host SSIS packages on Integration Services Server.
  • Ensure all departmental best practices for ETL packages are maintained.
  • Troubleshoot ETL errors with developers.
  • Perform day-to-day monitoring of backups/CPU/storage growth.
  • Manage replication tool (DMS) to create/sync and maintain new assets.
  • Maintain the UCSF ETL Framework tool in concert with legacy orchestration methods.
  • Automate and maintain handshakes between DMS replication and downstream data warehouse asset curation ETLs.
  • Use and support all UCSF service tools, including ServiceNow, PagerDuty, portfolio task management, and technical tools SSIS, SSMS, and GitHub.
  • Maintain thorough and detailed documentation around deployment practices, user provisioning, and database management.
  • Create and maintain ETL packages using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services.
  • Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate system designs and patterns to varying levels of leadership.
  • Participate in project planning, including scoping backlogs and determining estimates.
  • Assume on-call duties to support the operation of reporting and analytics systems.
  • Mentor other data systems analysts to share data warehouse administration knowledge.
  • Maintain appropriate business domain knowledge in healthcare, education, research, finance, or business administration.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area or work-related experience in information technology with an emphasis on database/data warehouse systems support.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the following technical areas: Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator, T-SQL, Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and administering and orchestrating Jobs in Microsoft Integration Services Server.
  • Experience developing and executing complex test plans.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with AWS tools and terms (S3, EC2, EBS, DMS).
  • Possesses working knowledge of networking and firewalls.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate complex problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented technical and process documentation writing and maintenance.
  • Must be able to work with multiple RDBMS environments such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and so on.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to automate functions in AWS (e.g., Lambda functions, PowerShell scripts).
