Steelmaking and Casting Technician

This position is focused on the tasks associated with steelmaking and casting for the evaluation of steels under development for the automotive, tubular, and appliance markets. The individual will have responsibility for preparing sample material, performing various test procedures, and communicating data and results to the research engineering staff.
Key Responsibilities- Performing steelmaking and casting related testing and analysis using various equipment, such as ASCAT, Bruker M4 Tornado XRF, DSC, Dilatometer, CSLM, CLM, LECO, and OES.
- Sample preparation, such as cutting, machining, cleaning, and polishing.
- Safe operation of sample handling and mobile equipment, including overhead electric cranes, forklifts, and road vehicles.
- Operation of power tools, such as saws, grinders, and sanders.
- Operation of computer-controlled test equipment.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite applications and computer use.
- Performing routine maintenance on furnaces and other lab equipment.
- Strong mechanical and/or electrical control aptitude and laboratory testing skill sets, including familiarity with the operation of basic machining equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as with a team, as needed to complete assigned tasks.
- Focus on safety and environmental performance in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
- Work areas include office areas, high bay areas, and laboratory environments at Research Munhall; commercial steel production facilities as required.
- High-temperature manufacturing environments and exposure/handling of molten metal.
- Must be able to comply with applicable safety requirements for both laboratory and manufacturing environments and with all corporate and plant safety training, regulations, and policies.
- Must be capable of moving and lifting materials and tools as required for safe completion of job tasks.
