Job Overview

We are seeking an Energy Trading Specialist to support our trading desk operations. This role will involve ensuring timely position summaries for traders and maintaining exposure monitoring throughout the trading day. Additionally, you will be responsible for risk modeling of trades, documentation, and calculation of exposures, as well as futures near expiry monitoring and hedging coordination with traders.

You will work closely with other Vitol departments to guarantee accurate information flow from execution to settlement in Vista. Your expertise will enable you to provide commentary on daily profitability reports, requiring a strong understanding of P&L drivers and relevant market information related to the matrix. You will also provide management information and decision support to traders by creating reports and/or undertaking modeling and analysis on their behalf.

This position entails several key responsibilities:
  1. Timely and accurate deal entry and reconciliation.
  2. Intra-day PnL and position reconciliation for Utilities Matrices, including Power and Natural Gas desks.
  3. Ability to work under pressure to resolve real-time issues confidently.
  4. Effective communication, prioritization, and expectation management with Traders, Operators, and Management.
  5. Strong working relationship and communications with internal departments.
  6. Ongoing development of Vista reporting and process improvements.
  7. Utilizing Vitol's software platforms, custom analytical models, and industry-standard techniques to identify opportunities and risks in North American Utilities markets.
  8. Maintaining, enhancing, and monitoring models and applications fundamental to our strategies and trading scenarios.

Required Qualifications and Skills

This role requires the following qualifications and skills:
  • 2+ years of experience in the energy sector (preferably in Power and/or Natural Gas).
  • Deal entry and/or deal reconciliation experience.
  • Understanding of both physical and financial Power and Natural Gas products.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with experience in VBA preferred; programming ability in Python, R, or other languages is a plus.
  • Analytical understanding and support:
    • Wholesale Power & Natural Gas fundamentals (generation, load, weather, fuels, transmission, gas flows, pipeline outages, etc.).
    • Ability to build and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly analysis reports for traders.
    • Ability to build and maintain tools that capture, analyze, and display time-sensitive data for traders, effectively collaborating with IT to meet needs.
  • Growth in programmatic development capabilities expected over time.
  • Energy asset valuation and deal structuring experience is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits
