Instrument Craftsman

We are seeking a highly skilled Instrument Craftsman to join our team at the U.S. Department of the Interior. As an Instrument Craftsman, you will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and producing complex instruments, equipment, and models to support research, laboratory, and field activities.

• Plan and fabricate specialized instruments, equipment, and models using various materials and techniques.
• Provide technical advice to engineers and scientists on instrumentation, model components, and specialized equipment.
• Assist in the review and modification of preliminary sketches and plans for instrumentation and equipment.
• Use judgment and decision-making skills to plan, design, and implement instrumentation, model components, and specialized equipment.
• Prepare cost estimates for labor and materials, schedule estimates for fabrication, and order materials as needed.
• Maintain the machine shop and other specialized laboratory and shop equipment, and perform repairs and maintenance as needed.
• Assist in laboratory construction and maintenance activities, and support the laboratory Model Makers in designing, fabricating, and assembling unique templates and equipment.

• U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status.
