At Gehl Foods, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) leader to join our team. As the Director of EHS, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health, safety, and security of our employees, contractors, and visitors across all locations.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and results-driven professional to lead our EHS function and drive continuous improvement initiatives. The successful candidate will have a strong background in EHS management, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and support a behavior-based safety process across multiple facilities, fostering a culture of safety excellence and encouraging employees to take ownership of their safety responsibilities.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive 3-year safety action plan, ensuring alignment with our company's core values and regulatory requirements.
  • Standardize injury management protocols and reporting structures across all locations, improving incident response and reducing downtime.
  • Establish a visual factory program, enhancing safety communications and promoting a culture of transparency and accountability.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Maintenance and Engineering to ensure compliance with insurance audits and corrective actions.
  • Support local plant leadership and HR on ethical sourcing audits, maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
  • Develop a standard training schedule for compliance-related topics, empowering local leaders to create site-specific plans and ensure employee understanding.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit timely reports to regulatory agencies, interfacing with personnel and loss control service providers as necessary.
  • Obtain and maintain required EHS permits and licenses for process equipment and discharges generated at each facility.
  • Implement a company-wide internal safety audit program, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.
  • Analyze performance metrics, initiate corrective actions, and follow up on their effectiveness, including funding allocations for capital and expense projects.
  • Identify and share best practices for EHS management and performance across all locations, driving continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Assist in developing EHS leaders across the company, providing mentorship and coaching to enhance skills and expertise.
  • Chair the Company Safety Committee, collaborating with the Director of Human Resources, local plant leadership, and other committee members to manage the overall safety program.
  • Review workman's compensation data to identify trends and implement key learnings across all locations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, health, and safety or related field; master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in EHS management in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the food industry.
  • OSHA 40-Hour certification and knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR, EPA 40 CFR, DHS, and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience handling government regulatory agencies and working knowledge of Food Defense Plans and Best Manufacturing Practices regarding site safety plans.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations, promoting and maintaining an inclusive work environment and culture that respects diversity.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% and possess a valid driver's license with liability and property damage coverage.
  • In-person occupation with extremely limited remote work options.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in environmental, health, and safety or related field.
  • Experience in ISO 45001 (or similar) implementation and certification.
  • Working knowledge of California State environmental regulations.
  • Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds, climb, squat/bend/kneel, sit, stand, and walk/move about frequently.
Salary and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $160,000 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) matching.
