Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Plumber to join our team at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. As a Plumber, you will be responsible for installing, altering, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining pipe systems, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, alter, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain pipe systems designed to conduct flow of hot and cold water, sewage, gas, steam, air, oil, and fire suppression systems.
  • Install and maintain pipe systems located above, under, and on the ground; in, on, and between walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Install, alter, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures such as heating devices, sinks, lavatories, toilets, tubs, showers, water heaters, faucets, drains, hydrants, water coolers, and laundry and kitchen equipment.
  • Install, alter, repair, and maintain devices such as traps, vents, drains, siphons, and pumps integral to plumbing systems, meter fittings, couplings, and unions.
  • Install, alter, repair, and maintain fire protection sprinkler systems, water treatment plants, and sewage plants.
  • Adjust and repair steam pumps and regulators, water pumps and heaters, air compressors, and fuel storage tanks and pumping systems.
  • Fits valves, couplings, shock arrestors, and other fittings to pipe sections; adjusts connections and pipe circuitry to correct such conditions as air lock, water hammer, expansion, contraction, and friction.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections of plumbing fixtures and systems, and initiates work orders to prevent breakdowns and to correct deficiencies.
  • Cleans, repairs, and maintains all tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
  • Sketched plumbing layouts, reads and interprets blueprints and specifications, and determines dimensions and quantities of materials required to complete a job.
  • Estimates time, cost, and materials required for the completion of work orders, and requisitions materials as necessary.
  • Advises in the selection, ordering and storage of plumbing materials, equipment, and hardware.
  • Instructs helpers in plumbing work; conducts informal apprenticeship training.
Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications: Training and experience in the plumbing trade.
  • Must be willing to be on call 4-5 times throughout the year.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test.
  • Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of the practices, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques of the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance on plumbing systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, layout designs, and specifications.
  • Ability to use/operate and care for the tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in the appropriate and efficient installation and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems.
