Job Summary:

The Occupational Health Nurse Specialist will provide medical services and support to employees at West Fraser. This role involves managing basic first aid, medical responses, case management for occupational and non-occupational injuries or illnesses, medical surveillance, training, safety, health and wellness, random drug screening, and coordination of services for physicals, pulmonary function testing, and audiometric testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic first aid and triage for injuries incurred at the facility and assess the need for outside medical treatment.
  • Implement a plan of care and monitor patient condition, coordinating treatment as needed.
  • Administer treatment and consult with doctors when necessary.
  • Provide conservative medical treatment, including heat, ice, and range of motion as directed by medical directives and Occupational Health Physician.
  • Oversight of First Responder program/training.
  • Procurement and stocking of medical supplies for the medical/health service station.
  • Coordinate early intervention and return to work activities for employees with occupational and non-occupational illnesses and injuries.
  • Monitor progress of employees on workers compensation, disability, medical leave, and FMLA.
  • Review written reports, surveys, and applications, making recommendations to the facility regarding FMLA, ADA, STD, LTD, and Workers Compensation issues.
  • Consult with attending physicians, QRCs, and other healthcare providers to return employees to work as soon as possible.
  • Maintenance of communication and a working rapport with local providers.
  • Ensure employees returning to work are capable of performing essential job functions, coordinating FCEs if needed.
  • Development and maintenance of essential job function documentation for ADA compliance.
  • Act as a liaison between relevant company personnel and employees to distribute pertinent information.
  • Provide support to the Employee Assistance Program, including referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide full and appropriate documentation of patient care/consultation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all employee medical information.
  • Obtain and interpret physician reports.
  • Act as a resource to the Safety and Human Resources departments in all medical matters.
  • Development and implementation of in-service training programs for injury prevention and injury care.
  • Participation in Emergency Response Planning Team and Emergency Response Team Meetings.
  • Oversight of First Responder/Emergency Response Training.
  • Assistance with emergency drills as appropriate.
  • Education of employees on PPE use as directed by Norbord policy.
  • Participation in safety meetings.
  • Assistance with ergonomic assessments and follow-up on safety and ergonomic projects.
  • Assistance with OSHA inspections if needed.
  • Coordination/administration of flu shots for participating employees.
  • Development and administration of medical reports for internal and external requirements.
  • Coordination of on-site health and wellness education.
  • Coordination of Biometric screening programs.
  • Providing metabolic screening for body composition analysis.
  • Providing nutritional coaching and consultations.
  • Administration of Tetanus/Tdap and Hepatitis B immunizations.
  • Potentially provide travel vaccines to employees.
  • Provision of health-related information to employees.
  • Participation in the development of written medical, health, and wellness programs.
  • Identification of opportunities for employees to improve their health and wellness.
  • Promotion of Norbord's Wellness Programs.
  • Coordination and fitting of custom fit hearing protection.
  • Coordination with local physicians for RTW physicals.
  • Scheduling of Audiometric testing.
  • Scheduling of Pulmonary Function Testing.
  • Performing Fit Testing as needed.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Substance Abuse Policy - Drug and Alcohol Testing for Random/Post Incident.
