About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Forensic Mental Health Specialist to join our team at the Virginia Department of Corrections. As a key member of our mental health services team, you will be responsible for providing psychiatric assessment and treatment to mentally ill inmates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial and ongoing psychiatric assessments to identify and address the mental health needs of inmates
  • Prescribe appropriate medication and/or mechanical measures to assist inmates in improving their behavior
  • Assist with preparation and modification of treatment plans, recommending and assigning inmates to appropriate programs
  • Provide supervision to psychiatric providers at the institution

Requirements:

  • Graduate from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an approved psychiatric residency program
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia (M.D./D.O.)
  • Extensive knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat mentally ill inmates
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Strong communication skills - orally and in writing/email

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialty in forensic or addiction care
  • Board certification
  • Experience providing mental health care in a correctional setting

Compensation and Benefits:

The estimated salary range for this position is $188,512 - $346,698 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. The Virginia Department of Corrections offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
