Job Summary

We're seeking a skilled Visual Development Director for AAA Games to join our team and drive the technical side of visual development for BioShock 4. As a leader, you'll bridge the gap between artists and engineers, collaborating with all art disciplines to streamline processes, create tools, and work within Unreal Engine to achieve maximum efficiency and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Art and Technical Directors to strategize technical needs and develop content authoring techniques.
  • Represent the studio on technical topics, defining technological initiatives and participating in their architecture, planning, development, and review.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for Technical Art issues, resolving problems, and addressing roadblocks.
  • Monitor project progress, providing updates to production and stakeholders, adjusting priorities as needed.
  • Define performance budget guidelines for art teams.
  • Manage a team of technical artists to build tools, shaders, workflows, and systems for artists, operating within the game engine's limits.
  • Mentor your team, helping them improve skills and grow careers.
  • Review and provide constructive feedback, ensuring work meets quality standards and project requirements.
  • Maximize team output by identifying and removing technical and process barriers.
  • Proactively identify opportunities and risks to improve the team's work, project quality, and studio knowledge.
  • Establish best practices and standards within the team to drive productivity, quality, and excellence.
  • Provide tactical support to ensure the team consistently tackles issues, communicates needs, and evolves best practices.
  • Ensure effective contributions from Co-Development partners and collaborate with other disciplines to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Stay up-to-date with technology and industry trends to drive innovation.
  • Foster a positive, proactive, and agile work environment encouraging innovation and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Art, Digital Art, Computer Science, or related discipline.
  • 9+ years of experience in Art, Engineering, or Technical Art roles, with increasing complexity.
  • 3+ years of leadership or management experience.
  • Deep knowledge and experience developing technical art solutions for AAA games in Unreal Engine.
  • Experience shipping multiple AAA Unreal Engine console and PC games.
  • Proven leadership skills, willingness to communicate, coordinate, and negotiate between disciplines with kindness and respect.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers, partners, and different cultural groups across multiple disciplines.
  • Highly detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and able to adapt to change.
  • Understanding of risk management principles and ability to put them into practice.
  • Champion of high standards, pushing for progress, embracing change, and challenging the status quo.
  • Able to respond elegantly to difficult creative changes and discuss, support, and advocate for opinions while being receptive to differing viewpoints.

About the Role
