Job Title: Refrigeration System Manager

Job Summary

Maintain refrigeration equipment and perform maintenance activities to ensure facility operations run smoothly. As a Refrigeration System Manager, you will oversee the ammonia system and guarantee compliance with safety regulations. Your responsibilities include training, scheduling, and managing refrigeration technicians to ensure they meet all requirements and safety training.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Complete timely and proper preventative maintenance on equipment and systems in the ammonia refrigeration system to ensure efficient operation.
  2. Replace defective refrigeration equipment as needed.
  3. Control temperature set points to accommodate customer needs and maintain product integrity.
  4. Maintain control of the water treatment system and associated chemicals.
  5. Ensure accurate paperwork and reports are completed on time and meet OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements.
  6. Monitor third-party maintenance vendors working near or with the ammonia refrigeration system to ensure compliance with company, OSHA, and EPA safety policies.
  7. Perform regular ammonia and oil sampling for analysis.
  8. Train team members on ammonia leak and spill procedures, providing additional coaching to those who require it.
  9. Participate in leak and spill drills to meet requirements.
  10. Actively participate in Emergency Response planning for your location.
  11. Inspect, test, and calibrate the ammonia detection system as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; college coursework or comparable business experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Ammonia Refrigeration experience required.
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) or ability to receive in-house PSM training within 90 days.
  • Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) Level 1 certification from the Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association (RETA) or Refrigeration Operator Class 1 license required within one year of hire.
  • Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to supervise a small group of para-professional staff.

Job Conditions:

  • Independently lift up to 40 lbs frequently and 60 lbs occasionally.
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat frequently to continually in a refrigerated warehouse environment.
  • Able to grasp, reach, push, or pull objects (such as boxes or hand trucks) frequently.
  • Able to step up onto and down from equipment as required by task (such as forklifts or reach trucks).
  • Endurance for continuous, fast-paced work.
  • Must pass respirator fit testing and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
  • Able to adjust to fluctuating temperatures and withstand freezing temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Ability to work in a noisy warehouse environment.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights while wearing PPE.
  • Able to handle and physically be near products containing food allergens.
  • Able to utilize job-related equipment (such as computers, cell phones, handheld trackers, etc.).

Salary Information:

We carefully consider a range of factors when determining salaries. At BJ's Wholesale Club, the estimated starting salary for this position is $82,000 per year. Please note that actual salaries may vary based on location, education, experience, and qualifications.
