About the Role:

The University of Iowa is seeking a highly skilled Surgical Technologist II to join our team. As a Surgical Technologist II, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms. Your expertise and attention to detail will be essential in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our surgical team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare the surgical area for patient care and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Serve as a primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns, or new staff.
  • Serve on shared governance committees, POD committees, or EBP workgroups.
  • Apply knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
  • Understand the principles of medical and surgical asepsis and recognize and communicate breaks in aseptic technique.
  • Provide for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants.
  • Understand various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation to anticipate needs during surgery and improve the overall flow of the surgical procedure.
  • Perform delegated technical functions and clinical activities in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Facilitate patient care with regard to the patient's condition and age.
  • Collaborate with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care and maintain the sterile field.
  • Participate in collaborative review of pertinent patient information for accuracy of procedure and associated factors influencing preparedness for procedure.
  • Assist in revising or updating care plans and developing new care plans for new procedures or surgeons.
  • Organize and review instrument trays and supply shelves.
  • Organize and maintain trial or specialty equipment, supplies, or instrument items.
  • Display critical thinking skills and anticipate the needs of the patient and surgeon.
  • Take preventative action on potential patient problems/complications and report unusual incidents.
  • Provide documentation according to department/division standards in conjunction with the Registered Nurse.
  • Perform computer functions within the scope of the role as defined by the individual unit or units supported.
  • Precept new staff and/or student technologists to scrubbing duties.
  • Mentor new employees and other surgical team members.
  • Practice standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy.
  • Follow changes in patient care protocol based on research findings.
  • Participate in and contribute to unit staff meetings and in-service programs.
  • Participate in perioperative initiatives or shared governance committees.
  • Perform other special projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Ensure daily unit documentation/tasks are completed, such as case reviews for procedure, implants, and supplies.
  • Communicate with surgeons regarding implants, instruments, or supplies for future cases.
  • Organize/revise specialty carts, care plans, or service line information.
  • Organize and provide specialty in-services.

Requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology or certification as a surgical technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT).
  • Two years of Surgical Technologist experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct patient care experience in an operating room.
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment.
  • Able to scrub surgical procedures.
  • Strong written communication skills.
