Job Overview

Chalk is seeking a skilled Upholstery Craftsman to join our team. As an Upholstery Craftsman, you will be responsible for fabricating and repairing upholstery for our clients. You will work with selected materials, install upholstery to meet specifications, and dismantle and rebuild furniture as needed.

To succeed in this role, you should have basic knowledge of modern upholstery techniques, tools, sewing skills, and a keen eye for detail. You should also be able to visualize design ideas and work effectively with our design team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meet with our Upholstery Manager and design team to discuss fabrication ideas, plans, and techniques.
  • Interpret design shop drawings and create upholstery stencils and patterns.
  • Work with purchasing to select and source upholstery materials.
  • Collaborate with our woodshop team on fabrication details and pre-upholstery installation.
  • Dismantle furniture, fabric, and foam for new upholstery preparation.
  • Measure and cut leather, vinyl, or fabric using design stencils, cutting machines, and hand tools.
  • Cut out and install foam and/or batting to the furniture framework.
  • Stretch and install fabric, vinyl, or leather coverings.
  • Stitch, glue, and nail fabric into place.
  • Recognize and smooth out complicated corners or fabric imperfections.
  • Conduct quality fabrication reviews on completed projects.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven work experience as an upholsterer.
  • Attention to detail and ability to interpret design templates.
  • Knowledge of upholstery tools, including hot knives, nail guns, bandsaws, and sewing equipment.
  • Ability to lift, pull, and manipulate heavy objects.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, and walk for up to eight hours a day.
