Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Testing Assistant to join our team at WVU Medicine. As a key member of our ophthalmology department, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our medical team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist ophthalmologists with patient care, including taking medical histories, administering diagnostic tests, and supporting during treatment and surgical procedures.
  • Acquire on-the-job training for the COA certification and participate in educational instruction and independent study to prepare for certification.
  • Perform visual field testing, basic lensometry, and keratometry, as well as measure and record spectacle prescriptions, pupil assessments, and intraocular pressure.
  • Clean and sterilize ophthalmic instruments, maintain ophthalmic equipment, and stock examination rooms with supplies.
  • Participate in maintaining universal precautions and move equipment to other testing areas of the clinic or hospital.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certification obtained through JCAHPO within one year of hire date.
  • Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire date.
Working Environment

The work environment is a normal clinical setting, and the incumbent may be exposed to biohazards and communicable diseases. The position requires the ability to work in the presence of ophthalmic lasers and wear protective eye equipment.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high-volume clinic.
  • Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and computers.
  • Analytical skills to complete technical aspects of patient examinations.
