Homeless Shelter Advocate

At Family Service League Inc., we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Homeless Shelter Advocate to join our team.

We are a social services agency established in 1926, committed to providing comprehensive services to individuals, children, and families. With over 60 programs in more than 20 locations, we strive to improve the quality of life for those in need.

The Homeless Shelter Advocate will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of families and their children in a homeless shelter. This includes enforcing shelter rules, completing intake consent forms, and conducting curfew checks. The successful candidate will report to the Evening Supervisor on a daily basis.

• The Advocate will exercise good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations.
• Handle special projects as assigned.
• Conduct intakes for new clients, ensuring they receive necessary support and resources.
• Provide ongoing support and counseling to help clients achieve their goals.
• Maintain positive working relationships with clients, colleagues, and community partners.
• Work collaboratively to set goals, resolve problems, and enhance program effectiveness.
• Develop and implement conflict resolution strategies to promote a safe and respectful environment.
• Conduct regular perimeter checks to ensure facility security.
• Issue violations for rule infractions and maintain accurate documentation.
• Access donation closets for clothing and distribute toiletries as needed.
• Oversee shower times, provide medication supervision, and document client interactions.
• Transport clients as required, prioritizing their safety and comfort.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the shelter's operations.

We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate your needs, with available shifts from Sunday through Saturday:

• 12:00 AM - 8:00 AM
• 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
• 4:00 PM - 12:00 AM

To be considered for this role, you must possess:

• A High School Diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of one year of experience in human services, preferably in a related field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computer literacy.
• A valid and clean New York State Driver's License.
• Flexibility to work at different sites and weekends is preferred.

We offer a competitive hourly wage of $18.50, reflecting the importance of this role in supporting vulnerable communities.
