Job Description
Mental Health Services in Emergency Departments
- Provide direct social work services to patients and families in the emergency department, addressing social and practical environmental problems.
- Offer emotional support to patients and families experiencing anxiety and stress due to illness and hospitalization.
- Conduct interventions based on initial assessments to address identified needs.
- Advocate for patient and family wishes when appropriate.
- Support patients and families during hospitalization with emotional support and education as needed.
- Inform care teams, patients, and families about post-discharge needs and provide continuity of care.
- Assist with in-patient unit responsibilities, including facilitating family presence at code events, trauma support, bereavement support, response to reports of abuse and/or neglect, and general support.
- Stay informed about resources necessary for providing patients with continuity of care before and after discharge.
- Participate in in-service and staff development activities, such as attending educational programs and offering topics for pertinent educational programs.
- Document all activities according to UVA and Social Work Policy Procedure and Guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Engage in education/research activities and provide individual counseling/problem-solving sessions.
- Pursue other duties as assigned by management.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program.
- At least three years' experience post-master's required.
- Licensed to practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia (LCSW) or obtain licensure within 18 months of hire date if holding an active license from another state.
