Maintains order and discipline through enforcing rules and regulations among inmates held in the facility while assuring a safe and clean environment exists for the inmates and officers. Jailers assist in emergency situations in the facility and must maintain physical ability to deal with physical, confrontational or combative situations. Jailers perform work that can be dangerous, stressful, and unpredictable.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Monitors all actions and movements of inmates through direct supervision or through intercom and video systems; mediates any disturbances in the blocks.
- Inspects housing areas to detect any contraband or unauthorized possessions to ensure safety and integrity of the facility; periodically performs total shakedowns of the blocks for weapons, drugs, fire hazards, tampering with locks, fire doors, or windows; performs exterior checks for broken windows and other signs of destruction or escape attempts.
- Receives and processes all prisoners in the Jail; performs an initial search for contraband or weapons; removes all property and money from the person and counts out the possessions in front of the person and then stores all property after the person has signed for the valuables.
- Processes intake and release paperwork for the inmate including fingerprinting and photographing the person and placing in a holding cell; if the person is to be held, he/she is showered and given clothing and placed in a cell.
- Dispenses medication to the inmates according to prescriptions; insures all medication is the proper amount and dosage and the inmate takes all medication prescribed; distributes mail, ice, or other requested items.
- Operates the control room, opening and closing all doors for Jail personnel and inmates; monitors all video screens and door warning lights.
- Distributes meals and collects all trays and utensils once the meal is completed; oversees the cell cleaning and scrubbing and the removal of trash to ensure healthy living conditions.
- Coordinates store call twice a week, allowing inmates to order supplies from the store; collects money for requested items, logs the purchase and distributes items upon arrival; performs inventory on store items before and after store call.
- May assist with transporting inmates to the hospital or to court; may assist with paperwork on the discharging of inmates who have made bond or served their time.
- Education and Experience:
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Georgia POST BASIC JAIL OFFICER Certification required or obtainable in six months.
- Valid Class I Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures used in controlling and disciplining inmates.
- Knowledge of modern principles of criminology and penology.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and county rules and regulations, policies and laws governing Jails.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in stressful situations.
- Ability to control a large group of inmates.
