Job Summary

The Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee the technical activities of assigned clinical lab areas. This is a critical role that requires strong leadership and management skills, as well as a deep understanding of laboratory operations and personnel management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise multiple lab staff and complex laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with established practices and regulations.
  • Plan and conduct meetings to implement new policies, keep employees abreast of current changes and standards, and ensure effective communication.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures, as well as new technical procedures, to maintain current knowledge of lab techniques, procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for staff in scientific experimentation, ensuring proper training in Standard Operating Procedures and equipment specific requirements.
  • Represent the lab in interactions with other departments, maintaining liaison with investigators, research personnel, and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of projects, ensuring results in terms of costs, methods, and laboratory resources required.
  • Direct quality control programs to ensure lab activities comply with organization and regulatory agency standards.
  • Perform technical duties of Lab Specialist 4, including developing, designing, and conducting small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in a relevant field, or Bachelor's degree with additional experience.
  • Four years of experience in lab technical and supervisory roles for Master's degree holders, or six years of experience for Bachelor's degree holders.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred, with certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in certain areas.
Physical Demands

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals, as well as keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This is a restricted position, and continuation will be dependent on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
