General Description of the Job Class

Operation of sonographic equipment, perform and communicate results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
  1. Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  2. Exams include, but may not be limited to, abdominal, vascular, small parts, ob-gyn, vascular, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional procedures.
  3. Follow established departmental policy.
  4. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  5. Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  6. Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the Radiologist.
  7. Assume responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
  8. Communicate effectively with the patient and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient's needs.
  9. Assists with the daily operations of the ultrasound department.
  10. Completes exam tracking/billing accurately on a daily basis.
  11. Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area, and maintains adequate supplies.
  12. Establishes and maintains productive ethical working relationships with coworkers, referring providers and commercial agencies.
  13. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  14. Assist in training of ultrasound students during clinical rotations.
  15. Performs other work-related duties as assigned
  16. Proficient in the performance of ultrasound procedures and does not require assistance from fellow sonographers.
  17. Provide direction and instruction to existing personnel and training to new sonographers.
  18. Assist in teaching of ultrasound technology to new physicians, residents, and fellows.
  19. Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.
  20. Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
  21. Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation.
  22. Perform other related duties incidental to the work herein
  23. **DUHS offers career growth and enrichment within Imaging services. There is a clinical ladder program with various steps and opportunities at each hospital within the health system.
Required Qualifications at this LevelEducation

Graduate or completion of program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification or currently holds required registry or certification.

Experience

None required beyond above education/certification requirements.

Level I - Must obtain ARDMS certifications as required by each entity within 18 months of employment.

Level II - Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer.

Level III A minimum of 4 years' experience within specialty modality in which they are seeking promotion.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.

BLS certification
