Advanced Materials Researcher

We are seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Researcher in Materials for Extreme Environments to join our team at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). This role involves designing and developing advanced materials for extreme environments, with a focus on ceramics and metals.
Responsibilities- Develop initial synthesis plans for innovative ceramic and metallic materials, optimizing properties for extreme conditions.
- Scale synthesis techniques for advanced materials using additive manufacturing processes and hot isostatic pressing.
- Characterize material structure and properties using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess performance in challenging environments.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to apply research findings toward practical applications in defense, aerospace, and energy sectors.
- Document and present research outcomes to both technical and non-technical audiences, contributing to publications and conferences.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on materials for extreme environments.
- Experience with ceramic and metallic material synthesis and processing techniques.
- Skills in additive manufacturing and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) for materials scaling.
- Expertise in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for material characterization.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate findings effectively to diverse audiences.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.
- A valid U.S. passport and the ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date.
- Experience developing materials specifically for high-temperature or high-stress applications.
- Skills in additional characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
- A track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals on topics related to advanced materials synthesis and characterization.
