Job Summary
As an Ophthalmic Care Specialist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, you will play a vital role in assisting clinical providers with patient care, including patient work-ups, diagnostic testing procedures, and administrative tasks. This position requires a good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with patients, coworkers, and supervisors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist physicians with patient care by conducting interviews and recording chief complaints, medical and surgical history, and ROS for each patient.
- Perform diagnostic testing procedures, including visual acuity, visual field testing, tonometry, refractions, dye disappearance tests, fundus photography, and OCT.
- Support a safe patient care environment by maintaining equipment and cleaning used instruments or sending them for sterilization.
- Effectively manage patient flow and direct physicians to the next patient to ensure timely care.
- Perform technical workups and special testing, including visual acuity, visual field testing, tonometry, pupil exams, lensometry, dye disappearance tests, fundus photography, and OCT.
- Communicate with patients and families regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, and surgery scheduling.
- Maintain and clean all equipment, and report to supervisors if not in working condition.
- Perform administrative duties, including returning phone or Epic messages to patients, families, and pharmacies, paperwork, telemedicine pre-appointment calls, and maintaining patient confidentiality.
Requirements
- High School Diploma / GED required.
- At least one year of ophthalmic technician experience required.
- At least two years of ophthalmic technician experience preferred.
- Intermediate proficiency in the performance of the ophthalmic technician work-up, operation of ophthalmology diagnostic testing equipment, and electronic medical records (EPIC) required.
- Advanced knowledge of eye anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as basic knowledge of pediatric ophthalmology and HIPAA regulations required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, solid interpersonal skills, and solid organizational skills required.
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels required.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) within 12 months required.
