Substitute Van Driver Position

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and reliable Substitute Van Driver to join our transportation team. As a Substitute Van Driver, you will be responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, activities, and other destinations. Your duties will include effectively managing student behaviors, maintaining a cooperative attitude, and building rapport with students, peers, supervisors, parents, and the community. You will also be required to use effective and professional verbal and written communication skills, present yourself in a professional manner, and successfully complete all required trainings, meetings, and professional development.

- Maintain a cooperative attitude and build rapport with students, peers, supervisors, parents, and the community.
- Use effective and professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Present yourself in a professional manner.
- Successfully complete all required trainings, meetings, and professional development.
- Work together as a team to keep the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean, safe, and presentable.
- Quickly and safely evacuate the vehicle in case of an emergency.
- Check the student roster to ensure proper ridership.
- Maintain current knowledge of all student requirements, such as medical protocols, IEPs, etc., and respond appropriately to events by following written protocols.
- While students are exiting, check the vehicle for remaining or lost students, items, etc.
- Properly secure students in required safety equipment and restraints.
- Safely assist non-ambulatory students into and out of the vehicle.
- Accurately complete reports and paperwork in a timely manner, including vehicle maintenance requests, student behavior referrals, timecards, directions, etc.
- Abide by federal law, state law, and district policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Utilize technology when required.
- Consistently perform thorough and accurate pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Immediately report accidents.
- Ensure the vehicle is properly fueled according to department policy.
- Prepare the vehicle for student transport, including inclement weather, harnesses, booster seats, etc.
- Safely and appropriately operate various types of vehicles and equipment, including radios, and emergency equipment.
- Report any safety or maintenance concerns to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Report all moving violations to the Transportation Manager, including any received while on or off the clock.
- Clean the van as designated by department procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Environment: This position involves working in an indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing temperatures, including extreme heat and cold. You will have direct contact with the public, students, and other district staff. You may be exposed to heights, loud noises, fumes, dust, and other odors. You may be subject to tight deadlines and continuously changing priorities and interruptions. You will work with moving vehicles, motorized wheelchair lifts, and other equipment.
Physical Demands: This position requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. You will enter and exit vehicles regularly. You will descend from the back door of the vehicle in emergencies onto uncertain surfaces. You will repeatedly lift and carry students or objects weighing up to 75 pounds for 100 or more feet. You will repeatedly push and pull wheelchairs/objects weighing up to 75 pounds for 100 or more feet. You will continuously use your hands, fingers, and wrists repetitively. You will use both hands and legs simultaneously. You will repeatedly stoop, bend, and kneel. You will occasionally push, pull, and maintain balance. You will have rapid mental/muscular coordination. You will have verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner. You will have accurate depth perception. You will have clarity of vision at varying distances to see small details. You will operate mobile motorized equipment. You will drive a vehicle to conduct work.
Hazards: This position may involve possible contact with blood-borne pathogens and/or bodily fluids. You may come into contact with chemicals used for cleaning buses.
