Data Journalist

The Baltimore Banner is a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to providing high-quality local journalism. We are seeking an experienced Data Reporter to join our team.

We offer a competitive salary range of $75,000 - $92,500, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes flexible paid time off, retirement savings, student loan debt repayment assistance, and more.

This position involves working closely with other reporters to develop and report data-driven stories, leveraging data to uncover, verify, and contextualize important issues in the community. The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling and a strong understanding of data analysis.

• Pitch and report data-driven stories that are informative and engaging
• Collaborate with the newsroom team to elevate coverage with data reporting and visualizations
• Become an expert on relevant databases and use that expertise to cover breaking and enterprise news
• Acquire data through various means, including public records requests, scraping, and negotiations

• A proven track record of reporting data-driven stories that reveal meaningful insights and hold officials accountable
• Strong analytical skills, with ability to work with large data sets using programming languages like Python and R
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to collaborate with non-technical partners
• Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines, with a commitment to upholding journalistic ethics
