About the Position

The Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist (TRT) is a critical member of our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. This role requires a high level of expertise and attention to detail in the operation of complex medical equipment, including linear accelerators and simulators.

The TRT will be responsible for developing new techniques, defining optimal protocols, and devising new ways to visualize and treat pathology within patients. This will involve close interaction and cooperation with physician scientists, physicists, computer programmers, manufacturers, and technical design engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performing all procedures related to simulation (treatment planning) preparation and treatment delivery to the patient.
  • Ensuring that treatment is delivered in a prompt and timely manner to maximize efficiency of treatment.
  • Recording all parameters and taking x-rays, and drawing blocks to protect non-target (healthy) tissue.
  • Providing patient education pertinent to their treatment plan and delivery, and scheduling and assisting in patient transportation needs.
  • Recognizing signs and symptoms of developing complications during treatment and informing the physician of such developments.
  • Programming technical factors by integrating input into a computer to assist in profiling the amount of radiation delivered and the area of radiation delivery.
  • Establishing and monitoring quality control and safety programs with documentation to comply with Federal and State regulatory agencies and JCAHO standards.
Work Schedule and Benefits

This is a full-time position with a Monday-Friday schedule, 8:00am-4:30pm. The pay is competitive, with regular salary increases and a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, sick leave, and annual leave.

Requirements
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Education: Must have successfully completed a program in therapeutic radiologic technology, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's or higher degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or other accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Certification: Must be certified in therapeutic radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy.
Physical Requirements

The work requires long periods of walking and standing, and requires lifting heavy objects. The incumbent must often assist and position disabled patients, carry heavy objects such as cassettes and lead blocks, and lift treatment trays.

The pace within the department is fast and often hectic, with patients scheduled at frequent intervals. The incumbent must be able to perform effectively under these conditions.
