Job Description
This role involves accepting assignments to work stations where patients are received and registered. Key responsibilities include:
- Greeting and assisting patients, identifying oneself, and explaining the registration process.
- Scheduling orders and charges through the computer system with accuracy.
- Photocopying necessary forms and returning originals to customers.
- Following department downtime procedures.
- Possessing a working knowledge of hospital department services and their locations.
- Collecting payments and deposits, balancing cash collected, and completing receipts correctly.
- Obtaining written orders from physicians and maintaining good working relationships with them, their staffs, and all hospital departments.
- Verifying patient eligibility and referrals as required by payors.
- Collecting demographic and financial information from patients and obtaining necessary signatures for release of information and assignment of benefits.
- Completing pre-registration processes and accepting reservations.
- Assigning or transferring patients to appropriate beds within the hospital and preparing patient identification armbands.
- Filing department documents accurately and timely.
- Demonstrating understanding of payor regulations, including Medicare, the 72-hour rule, and secondary payor rules.
- Compiling statistical reports on census, ER logs, room reservations, and requests for patient rooms.
- Answering telephone calls courteously, rotating calls, taking messages, or completing caller's requests.
Required Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Coursework or on-the-job experience in typing, filing, and general office procedures.
- The ability to read with comprehension, write legibly, and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
- Proficiency in using proper grammar and word processing skills, with a minimum typing speed of 45 net words per minute.
- Previous secretarial experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
