The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill an Insurance Attorney position in our Tumwater office.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Cases Review and Preparation: Review cases to ensure that action is factually supportable and legally defensible. Prepare memoranda for agency enforcement committees, verbally summarize, and present cases and make recommendations for appropriate enforcement actions.
  2. Research and Analysis: Research relevant laws and comparable cases to determine a range of appropriate agency action by utilizing a variety of resources including LexisNexis, publications, and internal databases.
  3. Litigation Support: Draft disciplinary orders, admonitory letters, compliance plans, letters and closing memoranda. Negotiate penalties and/or appropriate remedial measures to be taken. Present OIC's position at hearings before the Presiding Officer and the Office of Administrative Hearings.
  4. Legal Briefs and Pleadings: Draft briefs, pleadings, and motions; prepares discovery and associated responses, oral arguments, exhibits and examination and cross examination of witnesses; and present evidence using the rules of evidence contained in the Administrative Procedures Act.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school and possession of a license to practice law upon start date.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in the insurance industry or insurance regulation field (either as an attorney or practitioner).
  • Government regulation and enforcement experience.
  • Participating in administrative hearings as an attorney.
  • Paid litigation experience.
  • Washington State legislative process, including bill analysis.

Estimated Salary: $82,020 - $114,828
