Job Summary:

The Patient Care Tech (PCT) plays a vital role in providing direct patient care as part of the healthcare team. Working closely with the Registered Nurse and Unit Secretary, the PCT is responsible for performing a wide range of essential patient services.

As a member of the Patient Care Team, the PCT is cross-trained to provide age-specific care to patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). The PCT makes observations as directed by the RN and reports any deviations to the RN.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong understanding of patient care principles and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform general patient care including bathing, mouth care, changing linens, dressing patients, back rubs, elimination, hygiene, and other needs as expressed.
  • Observe patient responses and report any adverse reactions or other pertinent information to the Registered Nurse and Physician.
  • Collect and record vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Lift, ambulate, and transport patients, seeking assistance as needed.
  • Position patients and perform range of motion, assisting physical therapists as needed.
  • Anticipate patient needs and respond in a timely manner to patient and caregiver requests.
  • Provide friendly assistance to patient family members and visitors, emphasizing customer service.
  • Perform venipunctures for blood collection, collect specimens, and ensure timely transport to the lab.
  • Apply oxygen therapy and perform electrocardiograms (ECG).
  • Perform wound care as directed by the RN and observe universal precautions and aseptic techniques.
  • Accurately chart patient information following guidelines for charting by standards.
  • Deliver menus, prepare patients for meals, distribute food trays, feed patients, and remove trays.
  • Answer phones courteously and address caller needs quickly.
  • Initiate emergency procedures when necessary and work overtime as needed.
  • Assist in orientation of new personnel and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • State-tested Nurse Assistant or completion of a PCT training related to an acute care setting, or a Nursing Student who has completed the first semester of an acute care hospital-based clinical experience or has at least 1 year of Aide experience in a clinical setting.
  • BLS certified by the American Heart Association.
  • Experience in providing direct patient care, computer literacy, and previous experience working in a specialty area.
