Dance Specialist Job Description

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a highly skilled Dance Specialist to lead our dance programs and inspire a love of dance in our community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead dance technique classes for YMCA members, providing expert instruction and motivation.
  • Teach and demonstrate positive dance principles, promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Implement our Association Quality Standards and 9 Dimensions of Well Being into Youth Programming and Staff Development, ensuring a high-quality experience for all participants.
  • Participate in annual dance recitals, dance performances, Y Arts Week events, and other YMCA events, showcasing your creativity and expertise.
  • Develop and teach engaging class lesson plans that cater to the abilities and ages of the classes, reflecting YMCA dance curricula and core values.
  • Choreograph dances for end-of-year performances and dance company events, bringing your artistic vision to life.
  • Take a lead role in annual dance recital production, including dress rehearsals and performances, ensuring a seamless and memorable experience.
  • Effectively communicate program information and student progress to parents and staff, fostering a sense of community and support.
  • Monitor student attendance and development in all dance classes, providing valuable insights and feedback.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of formal dance training or comparable experience.
  • 5+ years of experience as a dance teacher and/or teaching assistant.
  • Preferred: Experience teaching classes, beginning through advanced levels.
  • Positive attitude and previous experience working with diverse populations.
  • Possess the knowledge and skills to teach classes, pre-school through adult, beginning through advanced levels, with multiple disciplines preferred.
  • Ability to create comprehensive lesson plans that reflect students' level and ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to choreograph beginning and advanced level pieces for dance recitals.
  • First-hand knowledge of performance and dance production.
  • Professional theatrical experience required.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of safety procedures and equipment setup.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications.
  • Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on the first day and other online and in-person training as required.
