Are you passionate about basketball and have a strong knowledge of the game? The City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation is hiring referees for the upcoming 2025 Youth Basketball Season. These part-time, seasonal positions offer a great opportunity to stay active and work in a fun environment.

About the Job

As a youth basketball referee, you will be responsible for officiating games in accordance with league rules and procedures. You will work under the supervision of the Assistant Recreation Manager and in tandem with coaches and scorekeepers to ensure a successful recreation program.

Essential Job Functions
  • Report for scheduled work with regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Arrive at work locations on time for set-up duties.
  • Officiate youth basketball games confidently and knowledgeably.
  • Control games in a confident and appropriate manner.
  • Assist in putting away game-day equipment and supplies.
  • E nsure all participants comply with league rules.
  • Make calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules.
  • Assist in emergency procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records, including incident/accident reports, timecards, and communication with the Assistant Recreation Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to being assigned to work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, equalize peak work periods, or balance the workload.
Requirements
  • Previous experience as a referee is preferred.
  • Working with children and/or teens is highly valued.
  • A combination of experience and training enabling the individual to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history and background check is required.
Work Environment and Physical Abilities
  • The position requires indoor work environments, with varying locations within the City of Des Moines. Travel to off-site program locations is necessary.
  • The ability to speak and hear to exchange information, sit for extended periods, run, bend, stretch, and lift up to 50 pounds is required.
