Job Description

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is seeking a Professional Student Nurse to support patient care activities under the guidance and supervision of a clinical instructor, preceptor, or registered nurse.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Monitor and record vital signs, detecting variances from normal and reporting changes to registered nurse staff.
  • Assist with daily living activities, personal hygiene, and physical care needs.
  • Participate in admissions, transfers, and discharges, performing and documenting therapeutic measures as delegated.
  • Utilize hospital computerized systems according to policy, dependent on unit needs.
  • Observe patients, recording responses to medication and treatments, reactions, and significant occurrences, reporting to registered nurse staff.
  • Identify health teaching needs and assess health/illness practices, providing direct patient care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Monitor and document patient conditions, reporting findings and abnormalities to registered nurse staff.
  • Contribute to plan of care development and assist registered nurses in determining healthcare needs.
  • Demonstrate commitment to growth and development through mandatory training and unit-based in-services.
Working Environment:

This role requires moderate to extreme physical effort, including walking, standing, squatting, reaching, pushing, pulling, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and patients. Lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.

The work environment is located in a comfortable indoor area, with potential discomfort due to noise, odors, cramped workspace, and fumes. Shift work may be required, and alertness and attention to detail are necessary to avoid injury.

The employee may be exposed to occupational hazards such as communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications, and disoriented or combative patients. They may also be required to be on standby and work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary by the Chief Nursing Officer, Nursing Director, and/or Nurse Manager.

Compensation:

Estimated salary: $45,000 - $55,000 per year, based on location and experience.
