Director of Academic Employee and Labor Relations

The Director of Academic Employee and Labor Relations will provide support to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel, and other senior officials in the complex and dynamic setting of the University of California. This role requires comprehensive and in-depth employee and labor relations expertise to provide recommendations regarding assigned cases, develop internal and external contacts, and function as a lead with other employees at the academic department and school level.
Key Responsibilities- Ensure UC San Diego's compliance with academic personnel policy, procedure, and labor agreements.
- Develop and implement effective training, informational, and educational programs for high-level academic leaders.
- Provide professional advice to organization executives and other senior officials on complex management issues.
- Analyze highly sensitive and complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, and provide recommendations.
- Develop and implement effective conflict resolution skills to address and manage extremely difficult and volatile situations/individuals effectively.
- Advanced degree in the area of law (JD preferred) or other area with equivalent legal and administrative experience.
- Extensive knowledge of academic personnel concepts, policies, and procedures, including employment and disciplinary practices, labor relations, salary administration, employee engagement, workforce development, and organizational initiatives relating to and/or impacting academic appointees.
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations concerning all areas of employment and academics, including discrimination, sexual harassment, contract, research misconduct, whistleblowers, records and confidentiality, defamation, and other areas.
- Demonstrated skill and experience in analytical and legal writing, including drafting settlement agreements, charge documents, corrective action correspondence, and other important employment documents.
This position is designated 'Confidential' within the meaning of the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act. Some travel may be necessary, and may require evening and weekend hours.
