Job Summary

The Salvation Army Family Haven Shelter is seeking a Monitor to work at our Cooling Center. This individual will perform related duties to assist, monitor, and maintain order of homeless clients occupying the Cooling/Warming Center.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work various shifts, including holidays, to maintain 24-hour coverage for the Cooling/Warming Center.
  • Conduct briefings with staff during arrival or departure of shifts.
  • Report accurate bed counts and client roster reports to the Supervisor.
  • Monitor clients to maintain order and ensure safety in the building.
  • Admit homeless persons to the shelter, complete intake, assign beds, and distribute supplies.
  • Screen admissions for weapons and confiscate identified ones.
  • Observe occupants' behavior and test for cause persons displaying disruptive behavior.
  • Maintain order and contact emergency medical services or police as needed.
  • Utilize crisis intervention skills to address conflicts and provide mediation as needed.
  • Deal with difficult clientele and work with various forms of mental health issues.
  • Complete shelter daily recordkeeping.
  • Assist with general cleaning of the building, including laundry responsibilities.
  • Assure clients are settled for the night and awakened in the morning.
  • Advise clients on services provided by The Salvation Army and other organizations.
  • Assure and monitor the feeding of clients during mealtimes.
  • Assist with volunteer church groups.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

Requirements

High school or equivalent diploma with three years of experience working in a social service agency or five years of work experience without a diploma. Higher education in psychology, social work, criminal justice, or a related field is a plus. Must be a team player, a self-starter, and perform well with minimal supervision. Good communication skills are essential, as well as an ability to work with diverse cultures. Computer skills are desirable.

Working Conditions

Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. Must be able to provide transportation of clients as needed, per the Supervisor.
