Animal Shelter Assistant

The Jefferson County Government is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Shelter Attendant Part-Time. This role involves semi-professional work in county code enforcement and shelter sanitization and operations, specifically involving animal control and welfare.
Key Responsibilities- Perform county shelter maintenance procedures in accordance with the Animal Care Facilities Act, including feeding, watering, sanitization, and other animal welfare-related duties.
- Conduct shelter facilities sanitization, upkeep, and rehabilitation as needed.
- Perform grounds maintenance, including mowing, weed-eating, trash pick-up, snow and ice removal on County animal shelter grounds.
- Perform housekeeping maintenance of the Division Administration areas, such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning toilets, and trash removal.
- Assist medically trained staff members with providing medications to animals that are sick or injured.
- Provide daily exercise periods and animal socialization sessions and enrichment sessions as prescribed by the Animal Care Facilities Act.
- Perform animal intake, medical evaluations, and temperament testing of all animals, as requested.
- Assist division administrative staff with customer service and data entry as requested.
- Perform minor maintenance on kennels, facilities, shelter equipment, and other professional equipment.
- Conduct adoption tours and assist customers searching the facility for their lost pets.
- Presents courtroom testimony regarding alleged violations of county and state animal control and animal welfare laws, only when qualified.
- Assist field staff personnel with impoundment intake procedures and intake evaluations.
- Perform on-the-job training of new personnel, when assigned.
- Perform emergency animal shelter operations and daily animal care during disaster response situations as directed, only when qualified.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of animal welfare and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The ability to interpret and enforce county animal control orders and state statutes is essential. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent communication and customer service skills.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with relevant experience in animal care and control or a related field being an asset. The ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, is also required.
