Salary Information

The estimated salary for this role is $120,000 - $180,000 per year, based on factors such as location and experience.

Job Description

The primary focus of this position is to supervise litigation brought against State Farm entities and/or handle discovery issues. Responsibilities include:

  • Working with outside counsel to formulate litigation strategies for bad faith, class action, and various other types of litigation
  • Assisting in trial preparation and preparing company witnesses for depositions and other testimony
  • Attending trials and providing trial reports to relevant business units, Law Department management, and colleagues
  • Developing budgets for litigation matters and related projects
  • Providing legal advice to appropriate representatives of the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates
  • Analyzing legal problems and interpreting laws and regulations
  • Analyzing legal matters and/or litigation resolution in creative ways
  • Serving as a resource for the organization on complex issues
  • Responding to written discovery requests (interrogatories, document requests, and requests for admission) in state and federal court litigation
  • Preparing and executing discovery strategies
  • Preparing to defend depositions of corporate representatives
  • Reviewing dispositive pleadings and other briefing prepared by outside counsel
  • Helping identify a diverse bench of outside counsel in jurisdictions across the United States
  • Collaborating with other areas across the Corporate Law Department to manage legal risk
  • Advising on meet and confer sessions

Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school and excellent academic credentials
  • An active law license to practice law in at least one state and a member in good standing of the bar
  • The ability to obtain a limited license in IL if not already appropriately licensed in IL
  • 5+ years of litigation experience
  • Advanced knowledge of legal principles and practices related to litigation
  • Leadership and management skills
  • Experience with class action, MDL, bad faith, and litigation matters strongly preferred
  • Experience with eDiscovery issues preferred

This is a hybrid role, requiring hours in the office and virtually. You will need to spend the majority of time in the office, but work arrangements may change over time based on business needs. Travel may be required to attend trial in person or other litigation-related events or activities.
