Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner Position

The Nurse Practitioner for Buffalo VAMC will provide advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. The Nurse Practitioner practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position.
Responsibilities- The Nurse Practitioner is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for VA employees and other patient populations at the VA WNY Healthcare System.
- The Nurse Practitioner will oversee the Employee Occupational Health Service and be responsible for providing employee occupational health services in accordance with VA Handbook 5019/1 Part 1 with administrative advice and assistance from the Human Resources Management Office.
- The position includes clinical duties and related administrative tasks in the completion and oversight of mandatory documentation and forms.
- Independently manages employees and other populations with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice.
- Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management.
- Safeguards the health and safety of employees and other patients, detecting unsafe working conditions and alerting appropriate hospital leadership.
- Determines whether the employee is medically able to return to work or resume regular duties without impairing their own health or the health of others after a period of injury or illness.
- Completes pre-placement physical examinations to determine the physical, cognitive, and emotional fitness of applicants for appointment.
- Determines medical clearance status.
- Completes mandatory documentation in a timely manner, meeting deadlines and monitoring progress.
- Detects unsafe working conditions or those that may pose health hazards.
- Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the Primary Care Team, Human Resources, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
- Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
- Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.
- Provides education to employees, patients, and their families.
- Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
